Lake Natron, Tanzania

Lake Natron

Alkaline Lake

Lake Natron is one of Tanzania's most otherworldly landscapes — a shallow, caustic soda lake in the Gregory Rift, so alkaline that it can reach a pH of nearly 12. Fed by mineral-rich springs and framed by the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai ("Mountain of God" in Maasai), the lake's red and pink hues come from salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in its harsh water.

Despite its extreme chemistry, Lake Natron is one of the most important breeding sites in East Africa for lesser flamingos, which gather here by the tens of thousands to nest on its salt flats, safely out of reach of most predators.
